Filling the Ladle Nozzle, Step by Step

What the fill is actually doing

The compound in a ladle well has one job: stay loose enough to run out under the weight of the steel above it, while surviving the heat of a full ladle sitting on top of it for the length of a holding period.

Those two requirements pull in opposite directions. Everything in the procedure below exists to keep the balance in the right place. A fill that is too shallow, too dense, or poured into the wrong shape of cavity will sinter through and bridge, and the ladle will need lancing.

The most common misconception is that free opening is mainly about the compound. It is at least as much about the fill, and the fill is entirely within your control.

Before you fill

A good fill into a bad cavity still fails.

The filling sequence

Sequence matters more than speed here.

1. Fill centrally and continuously. Direct the stream into the centre of the nozzle bore and let it build outward, in one continuous pour rather than several separated additions. Interrupted pouring creates layers with different packing densities, and the boundaries between them are where bridging starts.

2. Fill the bore before the well. The nozzle bore should fill completely from the bottom up. Pouring across the well first can leave a void beneath a covering layer, and a void is the one condition that guarantees trouble later.

3. Build the cone. Continue until the compound stands proud of the well in a natural cone. Let the material find its own angle of repose. That cone is not decorative, it is the reservoir that keeps the bore covered as the fill settles under vibration and thermal movement.

4. Do not compact it. This is the single most common error. Ramming, tamping or vibrating the fill increases packing density, which improves heat transfer into the bed, which drives the bed through to sintering temperature across its full depth. A compacted fill is a plug you built deliberately.

5. Leave it alone. Once the cone is formed, stop. Additional handling only compacts it.

How much to use

Quantity follows the well geometry rather than a universal number, which is why the useful measure is a condition, not a weight.

The bore must be completely full, the well must be full, and the cone must stand above it. If you are consistently using far more or far less than your usual quantity, that is information about the well, not about the fill. It usually means erosion has changed the cavity volume.

Recording compound consumption per ladle is worth doing for exactly this reason. A steady climb over weeks is a well block telling you it is wearing.

Timing

Fill as close to tapping as practical. The gap between filling and receiving steel is exposure time: to moisture, to dust, and to anything that disturbs the cone.

Where a ladle is filled and then waits, cover the well. An uncovered fill sitting in a shop for an extended period is collecting moisture in a material specifically chosen for being dry.

During holding

Long holding times are the hardest condition for any fill, because sintering depth is driven by time at temperature as much as by temperature itself. A practice that opens reliably at twenty minutes may not at ninety.

If holding times have increased, and free opening has fallen, the two are almost certainly connected, and the answer is a compound matched to the longer exposure rather than a change in filling technique. That is worth raising with your supplier with the actual holding times attached.

Shortcuts that cost a free open

Making it stick

Filling is done under time pressure by whoever is available, which is exactly why it drifts. Two things hold it in place: a short written sequence displayed where the filling happens, and a free opening number reviewed monthly with the crew rather than only with management.

When people can see the number move, the procedure holds. When they cannot, it decays back to whatever is quickest, and it does so within a few weeks.
